Projects 91: Artur Zmijewski

예술이 고팠던 날. 그리고 발견한 프로젝트 하나.
예술은 내게 있어 지극히 단면적이고 물질적인 우리 삶 그 너머의 의미와 진실에 대해
더 이해하고자 하는 알고자 하는 생각해보고자 하는 어떤 몸부림 또는 그를 표현하고자 하는 수단 같은것이다.
그리고 우리가 보고 입고 자고 하는 모든것 너머에 대한 더 깊은 이해는 어쩌면 우리가 또는 내가 가장 궁극적으로 알고자 하는 열정을 가지고 싶은 무엇인지도 모른다. 그래서 그런 '예술적 행위' 만으로는 밥벌이를 할 수 있는 극적인 탤런트가 없는 까닭에 이렇게 짬짬이 시간을 내어 아티스트들이 대신 표현해주는 그것으로 내 목마름을 대체해보는 것일까.

여튼간. 서론이 길었지만.

Projects 91: Artur Zmijewski

In his films and photographs, Artur Zmijewski (Polish, b. 1966) investigates social norms by observing unusual or invented situations. Seeing his role as "inducing the field," the artist often adapts the strategies of political action in his work, creating scenarios that cause a stir among otherwise passive participants and documenting their actual reactions. His work frequently explores long-term trauma caused by historical and sociopolitical events. While his projects sometimes focus on marginalized or disenfranchised populations, Zmijewski is also interested in what he terms the “dominant state of mind,” widely held popular beliefs and attitudes that shape “common reality.” For Projects 91, Zmijewski presents a selection of recent work, including a new film project, in both the galleries and the theaters. His latest film, Swiecie, 2009, which premieres as part of Projects 91, records one of a series of staged workshops organized and documented by the artist in which the participants are invited to create art. Zmijewski asked seven artists from different parts of Poland to collaborate with steel workers in Swiecie, a small city disengaged from the contemporary art world. Using facilities, equipment, and materials provided by a sponsor company, the two groups meet and create and install public sculptures. The project was modeled after similar collaborations between artists and workers in Elblag, Poland, in the late 1960s, which were inspired by utopian goals of a classless society and the union of art making and industrial technology. In restaging this moment in Poland’s artistic and political history, Zmijewski highlights the social and political realities that separate people today and questions whether these realities can ever truly be overcome.

폴란드의 작은도시에서 일하는 노동자들로 하여금 스스로 'Worker'라는 의미에 대해 정의하게 하고 또 표현하게 했다. 그리고 그들 - 7명은 - 그들이 해석하는 worker 에대해 표현하고 이들은 같이 거대 금속조형물을 각자 만들고 도운다. 그들의 노동자라는 Proletariat, 사회의 가장 낮은 계급이라 여겨지는 자신의 직업, 삶, 사명에 대해 표현하라는 질문을 받게 된 것이다.

걔중에 어떤이는 worker 란 그 한단계 이상의 어떤 ultimate goal 을 이루기 위한 수단이고 하나의 element or piece of puzzle 같은 것이며. 이 한 조각의 퍼즐은 함께 이루어 있을때는 눈에 띄지 않고 오직 그것이 없을때만 다른이들의 눈에 띌수 있는 것이라 표현했다
어떤이는 노동자들이 주로 입는 옷으로 상징적인 조각을 만들고 싶어했으며 어떤이는 자신들이 지난몇년간 만들어낸 80 킬로미터의 수로를 표현할 수 있는 그것을 만들고자 했다.
아 사진을 찍어 올리고 싶은데 그러지 못하는게 아쉽다.

이렇게 조금 더 일상을 사는 사람들을 깨우는, 또 그들로 부터 동기를 부여받는 그런 예술적 프로젝트들이 내게는 어떤 것 보다 흥미롭고 특히나 그것이 사회에서 많은 목소리를 가지지 못한 집단, 소외 받은 사람들 또는 힘을 가지지 못한 이들의 이야기를 삶의 가치를 끌어내고자 함에 있어서 좋았다.
우리나라에서도 이런 프로젝트들이 좀 더 활발하게 있었으면.
